Solar Energy Essay#1
Introduction
The sun
is the main source of energy on the planet earth and it can be found everywhere
on earth. From this source human created the fire a thousand years ago.
However, now there are many things that people uses from this source such as
electricity. In this day there are many source that people use today to
generate electricity, but many people feel that when others forms of energy are
exhausted or become too environmentally costly, solar power will replace them.
Solar power or solar energy is the transformation of sunlight into electricity.
Therefore, solar power is the most important source of renewable energy that
the people use today. As a result of this, there are many countries that went
for the exploitation of solar energy as one of the most important sources of
alternative energy than oil and gas. There are two ways to convert solar energy
into electrical either directly using photovoltaic (PV), or indirectly using concentrated solar power. For
example the countries which are using concentrated power are Spain and United
States. While the other country which is using photovoltaic is India.
History
The first
person who discovered the idea to create electricity from solar energy was Alexandre
Edmond Becquerel. In 1839 this French scientist built the world’s first photovoltaic panel
at the young age of 19.
Development
There are many countries that faced difficulties of
using traditional energy
sources from fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas and the most
important problems they faced from using fossil fuel are increasing prices of
fossil fuel and the worst effects of global climate change like increased
average temperatures. As a consequence, there are many countries and companies
developing renewable energy sources and new technologies to generate
electricity as opposed to fossil fuel; for example, renewable energy sources
such as solar power, biomass, geothermal and hydroelectric. Despite the
diversity of renewable energy sources, the most important source is solar
energy for generating electricity. There are many benefits of using solar
power. One of the main advantages of solar energy is environment friendly
energy because the lack of pollution and clean renewable when generating
electricity. Moreover, solar energy can reduce dependence on fossil fuels and
the importance of preserving future generations. Also it can be used every day
and everywhere in world and the Arab region has the highest solar radiation in
the world.
Modern developments
The Shams site is the world’s largest solar power
plant to generate electricity and the price of this is $ 600 million to
generate electricity in more than 20,000 houses in the UAE (wam. 2013). Shams is located in the Western Region of
Abu Dhabi and it will produce 100 MW of power to generate electricity to all
houses on the United Arab Emirates. His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al
Nahyan said during his inauguration at Shams 1 concentrated solar power plant
in Western Region Abu Dhabi, “An
outstanding achievement’ in terms of the UAE’s vision to diversify its economy
and sources of energy” (wam.
2013). In addition the President said, “Expanding our leadership into renewable sources of power demonstrates
the commitment of the United Arab Emirates to maintaining its position as a
major provider of energy” (ibid.). The idea for the development of
this project is to reduce the CO2 emissions and to diversify the economy and
energy sources.
Conclusion
In conclusion, however, the cost of production of
kilos / h from using solar energy is still high but this type of electrical
power is the candidate is one of the most important sources of relatively cheap
energy in the future. We should not be surprised in the future if we saw Shams
Abu Dhabi illuminate many cities and occupy public facilities and economic
institutions in other countries.
